From Nautical Illiterate to Tech Savvy: Aqua Terra’s Helm Makeover

When we purchased the boat in December 2023 the electronics, gauge clusters and switch panels were in desperate need of attention. The existing Garmin unit was mounted on a RAM arm that had seen it’s better days and was not in a position that was conducive to save operation. Additionally the existing camera system that was integrated into the single Garmin display only gave Port and Starboard side images and they were very grainy. We desired to update the cameras and integrate a stern camera to ease in docking situations.

After carefully determining what gauge layout options worked best for us we were able to determined that dual 12” units was the best option that would fit into our helm station without any redesign of the helm structure.

It did however mean we had to produce new helm panels which allowed us to reconfigure all the switches and rockers to intuitive.

Other upgrades completed as part of this project included new LED helm lighting, new Fusion head unit, JL speakers and a new stern floodlight.

The installation of the Garmin displays transformed both the functionality and the look of the helm. These displays also offer customizable configurations, allowing us to personalize the settings to fit specific needs while underway. This means that whether we’re charting a complex route through coastal passages or simply enjoying a sunset cruise, all necessary information is at our fingertips. Additionally, the advanced cartography provided by Garmin maps gives us superior guidance, visual rendering of treacherous shoals, and customizable waypoint options, greatly enhancing the safety and efficiency of our voyages.
